The CreamFAce Cup 2005/06: The Final...
So here we are, The CreamFAce Cup Final. Two giants of the prediction world come head-to-head to decide who will walk away with a brand new iPod Nano as the first ever CreamFAce Cup champion.
And it promises to be a tight affair, as both Boca Coidan and Glentic have gone for a 2-0 victory for Liverpool. But, as this is the final, it's not a simple as just predicting the score. No, Alex and Bill have also picked 4 potential goalscorers (2 from each side), and forecast the times of the first goal, free kick and corner, as well as the total number of yellow cards, red cards, corners, free kicks and substitutions (in each case whoever's closest gets a point). For each side. Oh, and who will win the toss, as well.
It all kicks off at 3pm and a couple of hours later we will find out who is the greatest predictor of them all. With stakes like that, you've got to be Up For The Cup!
0 mins: At kick-off the sides are locked at 2-2, as both have predicted a 2-0 win for Liverpool, and both have picked West Ham to win the toss. Which they do.
1 min: The first free-kick goes to Liverpool in the first minute, but as both Alex and Bill said 3 minutes no extra points are awarded.
10 mins: Glentic take a 4-2 lead as West Ham win a corner.
13 mins: West Ham's first free kick gives Bill another 2 points. It's now 6-2.
21 mins: GOAL! West Ham score and Bill gets a point for being slightly closer with his prediction (58 minutes vs 60 minutes) but both sides lose one that they had for their score prediction. And as it's a Carragher own goal there are no goalscorer points. Glentic 6 Boca Coidan 1.
25 mins: A quiet five minutes - no change to the scores.
28 mins: GOAL! Dean Ashton gets West Ham's second, but it has no effect on the scores in our competition.
32 mins: GOAL! Djibril Cisse for Liverpool. A point to Alex for picking Cisse, and one for Bill's prediction of 28 minutes. Glentic 7 Boca Coidan 2.
40 mins: Liverpool's first corner allows Alex to close the gap a touch. Glentic 7 Boca Coidan 4.
HALF TIME: Nothing further to report as we reach half time. We've now had the first goal, free kick and corner for each side, with Bill showing the superior predicting skills and taking 4 out of 6 points there. However Alex started to come back into it and Bill's points for being closer on West Ham's corners and free kicks are at risk as the game wears on. The gap is only 3 points, and a goal from Reo-Coker in the second half could propel Boca Coidan in front. It's not over yet!
50 mins: Kewell's been substituted which, as both sides predicted 2 subsitutions for Liverpool, has no impact on the scores. But Bill's picked him so that reduces future scoring opportunities for Glentic.
54 mins: GOAL! Stevie G scores, which gives each team 1 (for Liverpool's 2 goals) plus 2 for picking Gerrard as a scorer. So overall no real change, it's 10-7.
60 mins: Ashton gets booked, which gives Alex another point and closes the gap to 2. Glentic 10 Boca Coidan 8.
63 mins: A booking for Carragher gives another point to Bill, restoring the 3 point margin. Glentic 11 Boca Coidan 8.
64 mins: GOAL! Paul Konchesky's cross ends up in Liverpool's net, but it does nothing for our teams' scores.
70 mins: Dean Ashton is substituted, as are Xabi Alonso & Peter Crouch, but the scores are unaffected.
75 mins: Five minutes of nothing much - Rafa Benitez and Alex Coidan are both wondering how they can get their side back into it...
80 mins: Another West Ham substitution. No change to our scores - will they be dancing in the streets of Glentic tonight?
85 mins: Teddy Sheringham comes on for West Ham's third substitution which is exactly how many our predictors said they'd make. Makes no difference to the scores, though.
90 mins: GOAL! Steven Gerrard, despite appearing to be injured, scores again to make it 3-3 and possibly take the game to extra time. Both teams lose a point now Liverpool no longer have 2 goals, but gain 2 for Gerrard as a scorer. Glentic 12 Boca Coidan 9.
FULL TIME: We're going into extra time, so it's just as well we asked our predictors what might happen in this instance. Bill said 2-1, Alex said 3-2 so they're both wrong but as it stands Alex gets an extra point for Liverpool's 3. But it's the score AET that will ultimately count... Glentic 12 Boca Coidan 10.
95 mins: Liverpool players are dropping left, right and centre with cramp, but the teams are still locked at 3-3. And Bill's still edging it at 12-10.
100 mins: Nothing futher to report as both teams struggle to stay on their feet.
105 mins: The first period of extra time ends with no further score changes.
110 mins: As the pitch starts to resemble a battlefield, given the number of casualties, there's still no change. Penalties, anyone?
115 mins: Both sides come close, but there's no breaking this deadlock.
AET: Penalties! Fortunately we also asked the teams for their predictions in this eventuality - and they both said 4-3 to Liverpool. So it's not the score, but the scorers we're looking out for here. Everything could still change!
Penalties: Gerrard scores to make it 2-1 to Liverpool, and 15-13 to Glentic.
It's all over. Liverpool have won 3-1 on penalties, and that means one thing for us...
Final Score: Glentic 15 Boca Coidan 13
