The FAntasy Cup Final 2008

LIVE! From PredictTheScore Central, it's the culmination of another glorious season - The FAntasy Cup final.
Contesting the ultimate test of prediction skill: V will rock u!!! - a beaten finalist last year and finishing 9th in this season's Prediction Premiership... Blue Nose Till I Die - the outsider at 117th in Prediction Premiership... Banana Grove - 30th in Prediction Premiership... If you know your history - 40th in Prediction Premiership... YEAH! - 8th in Prediction Premiership... Champagne FC - World Cup 2006 winner and 14th in Prediction Premiership... The Mighty Clipton Romeos - 78th in Prediction Premeirship... Victory is mine! - former Manager of the Month and 24th in Prediction Premiership...

With an hour to go all the predictions are in. Unsurprisingly, everyone has picked Portsmouth to win, with goals to come from Kanu, Muntari or Kranjcar. If Cardiff score, it seems most likely to come from the direction of Hasselbaink, Parry or Ledley. However, for those of you unfamiliar with the (slightly lunatic) format of our finals, it's not jsut a case of scores and scorers. Oh no, we've made our predictors stick their necks out to predict the score at half time, times of the first goal, free kick and corner, as well as the total number of yellow cards, red cards, corners, free kicks, penalties and substitutions. For each side. As well as who will win the toss...

0 mins:  As we approach kick off, Banana Grove's prediction of 0-0 at half time gives them an early advantage. They start on 7.5 points (with most of the rest of those coming from the fact that, as yet, no-one's been sent off and there have been no penalties). It's not much of an advantage, mind you. The Mighty Clipton Romeos are currently in last place, but just 4 back on 3.5. There's some way to go yet.
Portsmouth win the toss, moving If You Know Your History up to join Banana Grove on 7.5.
5 mins:  A free kick to Portsmouth in the first minute give 2 points to Victory is mine!- they jump to 8.5 and now lead by a point.
10 mins:  A corner to Cardiff gives 2 points to Blue Nose Till I Die... They also move up to 8.5. Then Cardiff get their first free kick, which means another 2 points to a whole bunch of people including YEAH! who moved up to, guess what? 8.5 points. A three way tie at the top, but only 2 points between top and bottom.
15 mins:  End to end stuff but no change to the scoring. However, my 9-month-old son did try to eat my laptop. Thank God for the pause button on the cable TV...
20 mins:  Still no points being scored but there's plenty going on - mostly Cardiff free kicks. We need another 4 before anyone picks up a point for them. Oooooh. Kanu probably could have scored from there.
25 mins:  Arguably, Cardiff are shading this at the moment. This is so much better than last year's final - and that's speaking as a Man Utd fan. Cardiff's third corner means an extra point for If You Know Your History. It's now a four-way tie for the lead.
30 mins:  Cardiff are looking more likely to find a goal at the moment. No change to the scores.
35 mins:  Portsmouth on the attack now. It's a good, free-flowing, open game. I like that, but it's not giving me much to write about. Maybe it's time for a beer...
35 and a bit mins:  Cardiff get their 9th free kick which shook the table up a bit. But I won't bother telling you how because they promptly get their 10th so it's as we were...
36 mins: GOAL!  Kanu scores - and now it gets interesting. V will rock u!!! surge into the lead on 19.5 ahead of If You Know Your History, Victory is mine! and YEAH! on 17.5. Banana Grove now bring up the rear on 12.5.
40 mins:  Portsmouth's first corner means another 2 points for V will rock u!!! who has now built a 4 point lead.
HALF TIME:  Cardiff get the ball in the net, but it doesn't count. Hreidarsson's been booked so we've seen our first yellow card and at the end of an entertaining first half, V will rock u!!! lead with 21.5, followed by Victory is mine! and YEAH! (17.5), If you know your history and Champagne FC (16.5), The Mighty Clipton Romeos (15.5), Banana Grove (14.5) and Blue Nose Till I Diem bringing up the rear on (13.5). Looking forward to more of the same in the second half...
50 mins:  Cardiff come out fighting at the start of the second half and are denied a corner despite Sol Campbell hitting the ball into the side netting. Points unchanged...
55 mins:  A yellow card for Kranjcar means that V will rock u!!! move to 22.5 and YEAH! take second on 18.5.
60 mins:  Pressure from Portsmouth wins them a free kick and a corner which means 2 points for V will rock u!!! They're now 6 points in front.
65 mins:  Peter Whittingham goes off, Aaron Ramsey comes on. Champagne FC picked them both to score... And Portsmouth get another free kick which means that V will rock u!!! loses one of those extra points.
70 mins:  Utaka comes off, Nugent comes on. It's of no consequence as far as we're concerned. Then Thompson comes on for Hasselbaink - slightly more significant as quite a lot of people picked him...
75 mins:  Cardiff get another corner - which means that everyone who predicted a total of 3 lose a point but more importantly it's another point to YEAH! who predicted 4. V will rock u!!! still lead, but are back on 22.5 while YEAH! are up to 19.5.
80 mins:  Diop on for Mendes, which moves Blue Nose Till I Die up to 15.5 to share joint last with The Mighty Clipton Romeos and If you know your history. Then, another Cardiff corner means that YEAH! slips back to 18.5.
85 mins:  Portsmouth are 5 minutes away from winning the FA Cup. Are V will rock u!!! 5 minutes away from lifting The FAntasy Cup..?
FULL TIME:  Last subs for each side - Baros and Sinclair come on, but (despite a late couple of scrambles in the Portsmouth area) V will rock u!!! maintain their lead and win The FAntasy Cup 2008.

So, V will rock u!!! are the champions with 23.5 points - they lost in the final last year to Alex Coidan, just as Alex lost the year before to Glentic - but this year were never seriously in danger once Portsmouth had scored. A late surge by The Mighty Clipton Romeos gave them second place with 20.5. Joint third went to Champagne FC, Victory is mine! and YEAH! on 19.5 followed by If you know your history (17.5), Blue Nose Till I Die (16.5) and Banana Grove (15.5). V clinched his victory by being spot on with predictions of 1-0 at half time (2.5 points) and 1-0 at full time (5 points), with 4 extra points awarded for Kanu's goal, 6 for being closest with the time of Portsmouth's goal, Cardiff's first free kick and Portsmouth's first corner as well as another 6 for getting the number of penalties, sendings off and substitutions right.
Congratulations to all our finalists. Fancy doing it all again next year?
