Prediction Premiership 2005/06: They Think It's All Over... It Is Now!

PredictTheScore.co.uk are proud to announce the winner of the inaugural Prediction Premiership: Steven Mortonson! It's been expected for some time now as Steve has lead the table for most of this year, but despite his lead being eroded over recent weeks he put in a strong performance on the final day to finish the season with a whopping 1004 points. Steve wins £120 and shiny trophy. In second, and walking away with £60 is Chris Green who pushed all the way but couldn't quite catch up. Third place goes to Bamathinaikos (Bambos Christophi), although goodness only knows how. However, Bam is ineligible to win any prizes so the £30 prize money goes to Ernie Walton who held on to hold his lead over Nigel Smith in 5th by a very valuable point. Commiserations must go to them, plus the rest of the Top 10: How Bizarre! (Emma Nelson), Steven O'Donnell, Tom Oliver, OnlyAGirldWhatDoIKnow Utd (Jo Page) and Steins Magic (Bill Glennie). It was a great performance guys - maybe next season?

So how did you all find predicting every single game in the Premiership? It wasn't always easy, it's safe to say, but there were a few bankers each week. It's no surprise that Chelsea were, overall, the team for whom the most correct predictions were made followed by Sunderland, Man United and Liverpool. Arsenal were fifth but would have been higher if any of us could have got our heads around their away form. We all seemed to be living in 2004 when it came to Everton, who were the least correctly predicted team, followed by UEFA Cup finalists Middlesbrough who have turned unpredictability into an art form this season. Overall, the most correctly predicted result was Liverpool 1 Sunderland 0, where 60 people felt that Liverpool would probably, on balance, win. The most perfectly predicted result was Manchester United 3 Portsmouth 0, which half the league (32 people) got absolutely spot on.

Winning the Golden Boot trophy for most Game 2 points is How Bizarre! who hit gold last week with Cesc Fabregas and hasn't looked back since. In second (no prize and not that much glory, sorry) was long time leader Chris Green. Pats on the back also to Steve Mortonson, Alex Coidan, OnlyAGirlWhatDoIKnow Utd, Shah Irani and Richard Marlow, none of whom were far behind.

Predict the Scorer prompted no end of debate, at least between Bam and me, over the various strategies that could be adopted. Should you change your scorers every week, according to form, or pick your five and stick with them? Is it better to pick players with high points values for the rare occasions on which they do score, or should you stick with lower risk, lower value players who will score more? Should you pick five different players or one player five times? Most people experimented with most of these at some point, but it's worth noting that if you'd just picked Matt Taylor (66 points for 6 goals), Liam Ridgewell (56 points for 5 goals), William Gallas (44 points for 5 goals), Joey Barton (37 points for 6 goals) and Radhi Jaidi (37 points for 3 goals) every week you would have got 240 points and won the Golden Boot. By miles. Ah, the luxury of hindsight…

Thanks to everyone who took part this year - it's strange to think that we've gone from a couple of spreadsheets and a notice on the back of the canteen door to www.PredictTheScore.co.uk in the space of one season. But we couldn't have done it if you hadn't kept coming back every week, making your predictions and winning our prizes. It's not stopping here, either - keep your eyes peeled for lots more over the summer and into next season. So thanks to everyone, we hope you'll come back - and next time bring your friends!
